Sunset or the sky was burning?

Yesterday at 19:30, I was in my way to my english conversation class when I noticed this wonderful sunset sky, so I couldn't go on without taking a photo!
This is Avenida de la Ilustración (Ilustración Avenue), a little part of M-30 highway.
I'm so glad that days are being longer now, in winter time at 18h it's really dark so you don't strech out the day.

Ayer a las 19:30, iba hacia mi clase de conversación de inglés cuando me topé con este maravilloso cielo de atardecer, y no pude continuar sin sacar una foto!
Esta es la Avenida de la Ilustración, un pequeño tramo de la M-30.
Me encanta que los días vayan siendo cada vez más largos, en invierno, a las 18h es prácticamente de noche y no se aprovecha casi nada el día.

Early in the morning, (6:30 a.m) I arrived at Terminal 4 in Madrid Barajas Airport after 4 days in Gran Canaria. There were warm and sunny days, oh holidays! I had a lot of fun in Carnivals, at the beach, I can't believe I was in February... How were you doing these days? I've miss you a little! ;)
By the way, on the right you see those platlform structures which are for pick your luggage up, and I love those lamps!

Muy tempranito, esta mañana a las 6:30 aterricé en la T4 de Barajas después de 4 días en Gran Canaria. Allí tuve días soleados y calurosos... Oh, qué agustito! Me divertí un montón en los Carnavales, la playa... no puedo creer que estuviera en Febrero! ¡Os eché de menos un poquito! ;)
Por cierto, esta es la sala de recogida de equipajes de la T4 ¡Me encantan esas lámparas!

This is a curious photo of the train station Cantoblanco-Universidad. Everyday thousands of students catch the train to go to the University of Madrid. Can anyone tell me what's the meaning of all these signals, traffic lights and numbers????

Una foto curiosa de la estación de tren de Cantoblanco. Por aquí pasamos todos los días miles de estudiantes para llegar a la Universidad Autónoma de Madrid. ¿Alguien que sepa de trenes sería capaz de explicar qué significan todas esas señales ?

Talking about football

Evening walk and a lively conversation in a park. I guess they are talking about football (soccer), this weekend disputes the classic clash in Madrid: Atletico de Madrid vs. Real Madrid!!

Paseo y animada conversación en una tarde de invierno en un parque madrileño. Seguro que están hablando de futbol, se juega el partido Atlético de Madrid-Real Madrid, y claro este fin de semana no se habla de otra cosa.

Sevilla in Madrid

Sevilla subway station in a cloudy day, It´s located in Alcalá street, the longest in Madrid and one of the most ancient. Those spectacular buildings are Banks .

La boca de Metro de Sevilla en un día nublado, está en la calle de Alcalá, la más larga de Madrid y una de las más antiguas. Esos edificios tan espectaculares aunque no lo parezca son bancos. Cuando no se sabe qué hacer con el dinero se ponen cuádrigas y estatuas en el tejado, quién no lo ha hecho alguna vez en su casa…;) lo cierto es que no queda mal.¿no?

Madrid's "cavas" (Cava Alta, Cava Baja and Cava de San Miguel) were originally moats or ditches along the medieval city walls, moats used for defense and also as an escape route for people inside the city . Now, we use this caves as bars!!!!that´s the way we recycle in Madrid…

Las Cavas de Madrid ( Cava Alta, Cava Baja y Cava de San Miguel) fueron originariamente fosos o zanjas a lo largo de las murallas medievales ,los fosos eran utilizados como defensa y como una ruta de escape de la ciudad. Ahora esas grutas y rutas de escape las hemos convertido en bares y restaurantes repletos de tapas. Así reciclamos en Madrid…

(Hola a todos, como bien ha dicho Dsole soy ohcan (o nacho24, es que he tenido pequeños problemillas informáticos), y me ha dejado a cargo del blog, ¡¡madre mía qué responsabilidad!! , espero que no se note demasiado la ausencia de la jefa…)

I turned myself back and this is what they were photographing from Madrid Vision bus. It really worths a photo uh?
This is Royal Palace of Madrid, a huge place where our Royal family don't live anymore (they live in a smaller Palace out of the town).
Royal Palace was built up in 1755 and is one of the largest in all of Western Europe after the Louvre, occupying an area of 135,000 m² (!!). It's richly decorated by artists such as Velázquez, Caravaggio and Goya and several royal collections of great historical importance are kept in there (more in wikipedia link, spanish one is more complete and has more photos).
But the good thing is that you can go inside and enjoy them! So this is a must-see of Madrid :)

Después de la foto de ayer, giré sobre mí misma y esto es lo que fotografiaban desde el autobús. La verdad es que merece la pena eh?
Este es Palacio Real, una construcción enorme donde nuestros reyes no viven (ellos viven en otro Palacio, a las afueras de la ciudad).
El Palacio Real fue terminado en 1755 y es uno de los mayores de toda Europa, después del Louvre, ocupando un área de 135.000 m² (!!). Su interios está decorado por artistas de la talla de Goya, Velázquez y Caravaggio (entre otros) y además ahi se guardan numerosas colecciones de gran importancia histórica (más en el enlace a Wikipedia).
Pero lo mejor de todo es que puedes entrar y disfrutar de estas maravillas! Asi que esta es una visita obligada en Madrid :)

Okey, I'm just kidding. This a tourist bus called "Madrid Vision" which will show you the main monuments, places and streets of Madrid. You see far away "Torre de Madrid" in Plaza de España, built in 1957 as the highest cement building in the world for that time...
Guess what they were photographing?

So here it is an spectacular and tempting shop window from a bar in Plaza Mayor. As Oya from Istambul asked me many days ago, here you can see some typical "raciones" or "tapas"... let's try to find out how you named it in english: queso (cheese), boquerones en vinagre (vinegar anchovy), pulpo a la gallega (galician octopus, yummmy!), pimientos de Padrón (green pepper of Padrón) , morcilla (blood sausage), calamares rebozados (brolied calamari), and more... Oh, I feel really hungry right now! And don't forget to drink a beer (caña) or a glass of wine while! ;)

En fin, a buen entendedor pocas palabras bastan... Es un escaparate de un bar en plena Plaza Mayor donde muestran sus mejores platos... ¡Buen provecho!

Sunday afternoon I went out to take a walk as the weather was fine, and this is what I find, a Carnival parade in Plaza Mayor! They were representing a fight between Doña Cuaresma and Don Carnal. This huge lady (maybe Doña cuaresma) with a sword in her hand was actually a man... I realised it when she/he shout "¡A por ellos!"
Also, you can see there a equestrian statue of King Felipe II, placed there since 1848.

Esta tarde, acompañada por un tiempo agradable, fui de paseo por el centro, y me encontré con un desfile de Carnaval en la Plaza Mayor! Estaban representando un combate entre Doña Cuaresma y Don Carnal. Esta mujer tan alta blandiendo la espada era realmente un hombre, y lo hubierais notado todos al oir su grito de ¡A por ellos!
¿Veis la estatua ecuestre que nos da la espalda? Es el Rey Felipe II, y lleva ahí colocada desde 1848.

Yesterday was a weird day... The sun shone in the morning, it made a nice weather, I left my coat at home... but in the evening, the wind begun to blow hard, the sun vanished behind the clouds, and it started to rain cats and dogs. I was with some friends and we had to run till the first bar, it wasn't very cool but at least you didn't get soaked!
You see Mamma Mia neon sign there too, Musical shows are in fashion here!

Ayer fue un día raro.. por la mañana el sol brillaba y hacía tan bueno que podías dejar el abrigo en casa. Pero por la tarde, empezó a soplar un viento muy fuerte, el sol despareció tras las nubes, y empezó a llover a cántaros. Yo estba con unos amigos y tuvimos que meternos en el primer bar que encontramos... no era un sitio muy "cool" pero al menos no nos calamos!
También veis una cartel luminoso del musical Mamma Mia en la calle, los musicales están de moda en madrid últimamente.

Another scene in downtown... There was "Telemadrid" (Madrid TV channel) recording some report on street. I love her orange coat, and if you click on image you'll see she's holding something like little loudspeakers... but I'm not really sure what she was talking about.

UAM bye bye...

Maybe you won't believe me but this is "Universidad Autónoma de Madrid" (UAM), one of the main universities of Madrid and where I did spend my last years studying. It's a nice campus 15 km far away from the city with lots of opening spaces and differents schools where you can study Chemistry, Biology, Psicology, Physics, several Philologys, etc. There are also important scientific institutions like National Centre of Biotechnology and Severo Ochoa Molecular Biology Centre. I have lots of nice memories of this years... Can't believe I've finished there!

Oh! I almost forgot! Happy Valentine's day if you are of those people... or happy whatever day if you're like me... ;)

Aunque no tenga mucha pinta de ello, este es el campus de la Universidad Autónoma de Madrid, una de las principales universidades de Madrid, y donde pasé estos últimos años estudiando. Está a unos 15 km de la ciudad, tiene un montón de espacios abiertos, y allí encuentras distintas facultades donde puedes estudiar Biología, Química, Física, varias Filologías, etc.. También hay importantes instituciones científicas que colaboran con la universidad como el Centro Nacional de Biotecnología y el Centro de Biología Molecular Severo Ochoa. Guardo miles de agradables recuerdos de todos estos años... no puedo creer que haya terminado esa etapa ya.

Metrópolis building

I feel amazed about this kind of buildings making corner. Metrópolis building is between Alcalá street and Gran Via and it has an absolute french style. It was built in the early XX century (1911) by two french architects and a spanish one. It has an impressive dome crowned with a winged statue of victory.

Me encantan estos edificios que hacen esquina. Este está entre la calle Alcalá y la Gran Vía, y presenta un estilo totalmente francés. Fue construido a principios de siglo XX, diseñado por dos arquitectos franceses y uno español. Tiene una cúpula impresionante coronada por una estatua de la libertad alada.

After the rain

A few days ago I told you rain is wellcome to clean up the air. So well, last Thursday it rained a lot for a few hours, and then it stopped and the sun showed up and as I was walking, saw this reflection on the floor, and being inspired for all that reflections photos I have seen in Seattle DP, Sharon DP, etc, I decided to snap my own. It's not a big thing but here it is! ;)

Hace unos días os comenté que la lluvia era muy bienvenida y necesaria para limpiar el aire. Pues bien, el jueves estuvo lloviendo a base de bien por unas horas, y entonces paró, salió el sol y cuando andaba por la calle, vi este charco y su reflejo, e inspirada por este tipo de fotos que he ido viendo en muchos blogs, me decidí a sacarle una foto. No es una gran cosa, pero ahí esta ;)

So here it is the National Library, as Marc from Hamburg asked me to photograph some time ago... This is an huge building placed next to Colón Square and where you can find too The Archaelogical Museum. It was opened after 30 years of construction in 1896, even the first collection of manuscripts, books etc, begun in 1711 in an smaller building by king Felipe V. Nowadays there are lots of activities like exhibitions of art inside of it, and there is a huge collection of non-only books, but engravings, drawings, posters and photographs.

Bueno, pues aquí vemos la Biblioteca Nacional, como Marc de Hamburgo, me pidió que fotografiara hace ya un tiempo... Este gran edificio está situado al lado de la Plaza de Colón y comparte sitio con el Museo Arqueológico. Abrió al público después de 30 años de obras en el 1896, aunque fue fundada en 1711 en otro edificio más pequeño por el Rey Felipe V. En la actualidad no sólo dispone de un catálogo inmenso de libros sino que tiene una gran colección de grabados, dibujos, carteles y fotografías.

Juggling in the street

Oh, this performance doesn't have any in common with Madrid abierto festival I told you yesterday... They were juggling only the time while the traffic light was red, maybe one minute, but it was enough to make you smile on your way to home. One was juggling clubs and the other one played devil sticks. It's a pity they were so far, but I was in another road so I zoomed it out. I love their clothes, those hats! where can I buy one like this!? (What would think Ming of New York and the fashion week?)

Esta actuación no tiene nada que ver con el festival "Madrid Abierto" que os comenté ayer... Ellos hacían malabares sólo en lo que duraba el semáforo en rojo, pero era tiempo suficiente para arrancarte una sonrisa en el pesado viaje de regreso a casa. Uno hacía malabares con mazas y otro con palos del diablo. Es una pena que estuvieran tan lejos, yo iba por otra calle así eché mano del zoom para traerlos cerquita. ¡Me encantan esas ropas, los sombreros! ¿¡Dónde podría comprarme yo uno así!?

Madrid abierto

As I was walking by the street something caught my attention, like happened to this man. Again this adverstiment painted in the floor I saw a few meters behind... What is that about "Madrid Abierto"? So I search on the net, and it's about art-making live on the street, if I have time it would be great to enjoy one of this events, but I don't know... It's an impact way to make publicity! Anyway, this is the underground station entrace "Banco de España" next to Cibeles fountain...
It's a kind of funny... "abierto" means "open", and it's written next to a "hole" in the floor... you know what I mean? LOL (like Ame says... )

Caminando por la calle algo de repente, atrajo mi atención, al igual que le ocurrió a este buen hombre, otra vez un anuncio pintado en el suelo que ya había visto metros atrás.. ¿de qué va esto de "Madrid Abierto"? Pues bien, cuando llegué a casa, busqué en internet, y resulta que es una especie de festival artístico callejero que va a tener lugar en Madrid durante este mes. Estaría genial poder asistir a alguno de estos eventos, pero no sé si tendré tiempo... de todas formas, me parece una forma bastante impactante de publicitar algo eh? Aquí también podeís ver la entrada del metro de la estación "Banco de España"... ¡Hasta mañana!

Cibeles, yes!

I'm sure this huge and beautiful fountain is familiar with you.. at least if you're a little familiar with Madrid' culture. So this is "La Cibeles", a main touristic point of the city (and a simbol for Madrid citizens)... and there you see a japanese tourist too. I was there this morning and can't avoid taking a photo for you ;) I think this kind of Madrid is really beautiful and I'll show you more pics these days.
"La Cibeles" fountain was made in marble and finished in 1792, so as you can imagine a lot of history has passed trough its eyes.

Estoy segura de que esta fuente tan grande y hermosa os sonará bastante... al menos si conoceis algo típico de Madrid. Es la fuente de la Cibeles, un punto turístico muy importante y un símbolo para los madrileños... y aquí también veis un turista japonés. Pasé por allí esta mañana y no pude evitar fotografiar esta zona de Madrid que tanto me gusta, asi que os iré mostrando algunas fotos estos días.
La fuente de La Cibeles está hecha de mármol y se acabó su construcción en 1792, por lo que como podeís imaginar, mucha historia de la ciudad ha pasado frente a sus ojos.

Tiles roof (tejados) in Madrid

Well, here is another sight of the city... I love these roofs made of tiles that you can see if enlarge the photo. It gives a rustic touch to the city, don't you think? It's cool that there are modern buildings but this houses has the real captivation of Madrid. Love it!
oh, by the way you can see the Real Theatre (the huge building at right), and La Almudena Cathedral over there... see you!

Bueno, pues aquí va otra vista de la ciudad... Me encantan estos tejados de teja (valga la redundancia) que podeis ver si agrandaís la foto, dan un toque rústico a la ciudad ¿verdad? Está muy bien que haya edificios enormes y modernísimos, pero estas casas son el verdadero encanto de la ciudad. ¡Me encantan!
Ah, por cierto, aquí vemos el Teatro Real (el edificio ese enorme de la derecha) y la Catedral de la Almudena (al fondo, la cúpula)... hasta mañana!

There's something in the air...

When there are some days without raining, Madrid's air get really dirty. I worried sometimes about pollution, but you don't realise it until you went away and see that atmosphere... At least this weekend has rained a little so the air should be more clean. This photo was taken Friday at 15 km far away (more or less) from North.
You can see there the new skycrapper complex (they're really huge!), the KIO towers (one is behind the electric post) and the Picasso tower at right of the photo (but it's not very clear). (Click to see previus post about this buildings)

Cuando no llueve por una temporada, el aire de Madrid es queda bastante sucio. A mí me preocupa la contaminación de mi ciudad, pero muchas veces no te das cuenta de ella hasta que no sales de la ciudad y ves esta nube gris sobre ella; al menos este fin de semana llovió un poco, por lo que ahora estará el ambiente algo más limpio. Esta foto la tomé el viernes, a unos 15 km de la ciudad, desde el Norte.
Puedes observar el nueve complejo de rascacielos (son altísimos!), las torres KIO (una está detrás del poste eléctrico) y la Torre Picasso a la derecha, pero no se ve muy clara.

Today's February 4th, there are still some christmas stuff in the street... Can you see that colorful christmas tree over there? I think it's funny and kind of calm-being of those operators who have to remove all these things. Do you have any adornment after January in your city?

Hoy, día 4 de Febrero, disfrutamos todavía de algunos adornos navideños, como este gran y colorido árbol que hay en el fondo. Me parece gracioso y da cuenta de la tranquilidad de los operarios que tienen que encargarse de estas cosas. ¿Teneis algún adorno que haya sobrevivido al mes de enero en vuestra ciudad?

Blood donation

This is La paz Hospital in Madrid, Blood donation Unit. It was a moment really sunny.

In a donation, 400 ml of blood are extracted, plus other 50 ml for later tests (to determine the sanguineous group, quality of blood, possible diseases). In Spain only those who are under 18 years old and weight more than 50 kg are allowed to donate.
It's a very important and solidary event in which you help in a disinterested way to people with healthy troubles. Check what wikipedia says about blood donation here.

Esto es la unidad de donantes de sangre del hospital de La Paz en Madrid. Fue un momento realmente soleado!
En una donación, se extraen 400 ml de sangre, más otros 50 para otros test (grupo sanguíneo, calidad de la muestra, posibles enfermedades). En España, sólo aquellos mayores de 18 años y que pesen más de 50 kg pueden donar.
Es un acto muy importante y solidario, el ayudar a gente de forma desinteresada.

This is west tower of the KIO towers in Plaza Castilla. If you look carefully you can see the other's tower reflection (dark shadow) and lot of buildings reflected too. The yellow roof on the right is the Plaza Castilla bus station.

Esta es una de las Torres KIO en Plaza de Castilla. Si miras atentamente, verás la otra torre (mancha oscura) y muchas casitas reflejadas. El tejado amarillo pertenece al intercambiador de Plaza de Castilla.

Theme day: What annoys you most in your city?

Well, if you ask me... I'd said TRAFFIC-JAM!!!! It's a long way to get home... not for the distance, just because there are lots of cars everywhere... And it really gets worse since last year because of the several highway-works happening... What if we people think a little and share the car? or another idea... we could take the bus!! ahaa... but it's to confortable ride your car from work to your door at home... pity, so please, someone must improve the alternatives, more buses, more underground, more and more to leave your car at home!
Take care of our planet!

Pues si me preguntaís... lo tengo muy claro, el TRÁFICO!!!! Es un largo camino hasta casa, el de todos los días, filas de coches inmóviles, la gente que se impacienta... Y realmente todo ha ido a peor estos último años debido a la cantidad de obras que hay en distintas carreteras de Madrid... Y ¿qué tal sería si cambiásemos de actitud y compartieramos el coche? o ¿y si vamos en bus? pero claro, es muy cómodo salir del trabajo y llegar a la puerta de casa en coche... es una pena, pero que alguien haga algo, hay que mejorar las alternativas, más autobuses, más metros, más y más ideas para dejar el coche en casa!
