Pirulí at O'Donnell street

An spontaneous shot in O'Donnell street. It would have been better without the mini-bus there but, I've told you, it was an spontaneous shot. Stop walking-snap a photo-and walk again! ;)
A pirulín is a conic-shaped hard candy of about 10 to 15 cm long, with a very sharp peak in one end and a handle stick in the other... we had our own special pirulí, a 231-meters steel-and-concrete television tower.
Can you imagine a lollipop of that shape!?

Una foto espontánea desde la calle O'Donnell. Habría estado mejor sin ese mini-bus ahí en frente, pero oye, ya dije que era espontánea! Un de esas de parar 1 segundo, hacer la foto y volver a ponerse en marcha.
El pirulí es un caramelo duro con forma de cono que tiene un palito para agarrarlo con la mano (como el chupachups pero en cono)... Aquí nosotros tenemos uno de acero y hormigón de 231 metros que nos sirve como antena de televisión.
No estaría mal que fuese un poco más dulce de vez en cuando... ;)

Fallen Angel

This is such an special statue.
As I've read it's the only one in the world dedicated to the Fallen Angel, Lucifer. It was built in 1877 and then cast in bronze for the Exposition Universelle of Paris (1878). It's located in Retiro Park since 1885.
Apart of religious controversity and double meanings, I really like it. It's powerful indeed. Dramatic. Different. What do you think?

Esta es una estatua un tanto especial.
Según he leído, es la única estatua que hay en el mundo dedicada al Ángel Caído, Lucifer. Fue construída en 1877 y bañada en bronce para la Expo de Paris en 1878. Puedes encontrarla en el Retiro desde 1885.
Aparte de toda controversia religiosa y dobles sentidos, me encanta. Es dramática. Impresionante. Diferente. ¿Qué opinais?

A booky day!

This morning I went to Retiro Park to the "Feria del Libro" (Book Parade?) that happens every year in this place. It's a great chance to find some rare books, get you favourite book signed by the author or take a walk and see what's going on with new books on sale. Retiro Park is also a very nice place to spend the day... I'll show you more photos this week!

Esta mañana me acerqué a la Feria del Libro que tiene lugar cada año por estas fechas en el Parque del Retiro. Es una gran oportunidad para buscar ese libro raro que tanto te gusta, o que te firmen los autores sus mejores obras, o ver qué hay de nuevo en el mundo de las editoriales. Y de paso dar una vuelta por el Parque del Retiro, que nunca está de más! Ya os enseñaré más fotos esta semana ;)

Rainy spring days

Hey, I'm back! I'm sorry for not posting all these days.. but believe I couldn't do it at all!
I'm trying my best, but it's hard, guys how can you make that everyday!?
Well, in Madrid these days it has been raining a lot (cats and dogs!) and when that happens the city becomes a nightmare, a chaos everywhere... I hope you had a wonderful week and have a great weekend! :)


Ya estoy aquí! Siento mucho todo este retraso con el blog, pero en serio, que no ha sido posible publicar ni un solo día! Estoy intentándolo de veras, pero es complicado, ¿cómo lo haceís vosotros?
Bueno, estos días en Madrid está haciendo malísimo, diluviando, muy mal tiempo, y la ciudad se vuelve un caos con tanta agua... Espero que hayais tenido una buena semana y que tengaís un super finde! :)

One of the biggest problems for young people in Spain is the house's costing. It's almost impossible for a normal working person to afford its own house. And the prize keep on' going high and high... And this is a way to complain about it, in the Complutense Campus (you see Pharmacology School over there) they have set a camping.
Is that problem happening in your city?

El precio de las casas en Madrid es bastante desorbitado. Para la mayoría de los jóvenes con trabajo es prácticamente imposible comprarse su propia casa. Y los precios siguen subiendo y subiendo. Y esto que veis es una forma de protestar, montando un cámping en el campus de la Complutense (allí se ve la Facultad de Farmacia).
¿Teneis este problema en vuestra ciudad?

Es Madrid no Madriz

Yesterday (San Isidro) Matritensis enjoyed a sunny day in Pradera de San Isidro celebrating our Madrid day in the traditional way. He runs an interesting blog about Madrid called "Es Madrid no Madriz"where he writes about what's going on in our city. There's a lot of nice Madrid photographs like this, which I asked him for you to see how a chulapo and chulapa costumes was like. Thank you ;)

Ayer (día de San Isidro) Matritensis disfrutó bajo el sol en la pradera de San Isidro celebrando nuestro día a la forma tradicional. El lleva un blog muy chulo sobre Madrid llamado "Es Madrid no Madriz"donde escribe y fotografía distintos acontecimientos que tienen lugar en la ciudad. Además tiene un montón de fotos guapísimas como esta, que me cedió amablemente y que le agradezco un montón, para que podaís ver como son los trajes típicos de chulapo y chulapa. Gracias! ;)

San Isidro

Today's San isidro, Madrid's saint. That involve a lot of things...
First, yesterday in Vistillas Garden there was an endless party with lots of people anywhere (sorry, the photo sucks)
Second, today every shop (tiny or bigger) is closed.
And third, holiday, sun and free time, fancy a walk? (or let's go to bed if you hadn't slept at all...)

Hoy es San Isidro, patrón de Madrid, lo que implica varias cosas...
Primero, ayer (y estos días de atrás) de fiesta en las Vistillas hasta bien tarde (siento esa pésima foto).
Segundo, hoy está todo cerrado, ya sea tienda pequeña, oficina, etc.
Y tercero, vacaciones, sin trabajar, solecito y tiempo libre ¿hace un paseíto? (o a dormir si ayer la cosa se alargó demasiado...) ;)

Aesculus hippocastanum

The Common Horse-chestnut is a large deciduous tree, native to a small area in the mountains of the Balkans in southeast Europe, but it is widely cultivated throughout the temperate world. (see wikipedia info)
I found it at the campus in its blooming and I think it's gorgeous! Do you have a favourite tree?

El Castaño de Indias (o falso castaño) es un árbol enorme y leñoso, proviene de la zona de los Balcanes pero se cultiva (de forma ornamental) en climas templados.
Encontré este impresionante ejemplar en el campus y tuve que sacarle una foto.

De camino al curro, esperando al autobús en Herrera Oria, un barrio bastante residencial. Esos bloques tienen hasta 16 pisos, no está nada mal eh? Me pregunto cómo verán Madrid desde allí arriba... Sólo una escena cotidiana para hoy, pasad un buen finde!!

This is Madrid's Mosque (or better said, a little part of the Mosque). As I've heard is the second biggest in Europe... built in 1992, it's all of white marble.
I like the detail at the end of the tip. Do you know Madrid was founded as Al-Matrit in IX century by Emir Mohamed I and was Muslim until XV century? Interesting...

Esta es la Mezquita de Madrid (o mejor dicho, parte de ella). Según he oído, es la segunda más grande de Europa... construída en 1992, toda de mármol blanco.
Me gusta el detalle del final de la punta ¿Sabíais que Madrid fue fundada por el Emir Mohamed I en el siglo IX y que continuó siendo musulmana hasta el siglo XV? Curioso ¿verdad?

So I thought this was a nice post for today, my mom and I in 1982! (I was there a few months old)... Happy day to all the mothers in the world!! You made such a beautiful "job" ;)

Sí, ya sé que publiqué una foto casi igual a esta en otra ocasión (míralo aquí), pero tengo varias razones para hacerlo... Una: la luz (la otra vez era media tarde y toda la calle estaba a la sombra); dos: el edificio que veis en primer plano (Capitol o schweppes) estaba cubierto por una andamio horrible, y tres: no me canso de mirarla!!
Esta es la calle Gran Vía, una de las más importantes.

What you see in those cars are the Elm's round fruit called samara.

Una faena, parece nieve, pero es el fruto del Olmo, la sámara, que cayó por el peso de la lluvia.

And I found this sculpture near Plaza de España dedicated to the people of 2nd May in 1808 (main character of the event) , so I think it's appropiate for today! ( I have another post about 2nd May here)
Tomorrow back to work after so many free days...

2 de Mayo, es el día de la Comunidad de Madrid (fiesta). Se conmemora el levantamiento de la gente de Madrid contra la ocupación francesa... Y encontré este monumento cerca de Plaza España dedicado al pueblo del 2 de Mayo de 1808 (el protagonista del evento), por lo que creo que va bastante bien para hoy! (tengo otro post sobre el 2 de Mayo aquí)
Mañana vuelta al trabajo después de tantos días de fiesta...

Maybe this is one the most special trips I've ever made... I was in Slovenia last November and this is Lake Bled, in northwestern, close to the Alps. Beautiful!
