Todo a 100

That's a corner in some street in Barrio del Pilar. I get flashed about the brighter yellow and orange adverstiment... I wonder if that has its own light in the dark... ^^ And the next shop it's what we used to call "todo a 100" (all from 100) but when the euro arrived it changed to "todo a 0.60" (100 ptas = 0.60 euro) This is the kind of made-in-China shop where you'll find everything... it's usually very cheap but, be carefull, cheapest things don't go far!

Esta es una esquina de una calle en el Barrio del Pilar. Todos estos carteles amarillos y naranjas fluorescentes cegaron mi vista cuando paseaba.. Me pregunto si por la noche brillarán... Y la tienda de al lado es lo que conocemos como un "todo a 100" aunque desde que llegó el euro pasó a llamarse "todo a 0.60". Es la típica tienda made in china en la que puedes comprar de todo y a bajo precio, pero cuidado! las cosas baratas no suelen durar mucho!

Aquí os muestro a 8 o 9 bichillos... Mi hermana quitó un trozo de corteza y ahí estaban. Parece que dormían plácidamente o estaban en una reunión privada... ^^

And the Goya goes to...

Tonight (Sunday night) was the spanish' cinema night, the Goya ceremony (like the Oscars in Spain). I like cinema very much but I don't go very often... The 4 main films were: Alatriste (directed byAgustín Díaz-Llanes), Salvador Puig Antich (Manuel Huerga), El laberinto del Fauno (Guillermo del Toro) y Volver (Pedro Almodóvar). I've only watched Volver, and I enjoyed a lot!
- And the Goya goes to... Volver, best movie
Have you watched any of them? I really don't know how international our cinema is... (I know Pedro Almodóvar and some actors/actress are)
By the way, it's Cines Callao in downtowm on this photo, starring Rocky VI and the new one by Clint Eastwood.

Esta noche (la noche del domingo) era la del cine español, la gala de los Goya. A mí me gusta mucho el cine, pero no voy muy a menudo... Las 4 películas candidatas al mejor premio eran: Alatriste, Salvador Puig Antich, el Laberinto del Fauno y Volver. Sólo he visto Volver, y me gustó mucho!
- Y la película ganadora del Goya a mejor película es.. Volver!
¿Habeís visto alguna de estas? No sé como de internacional es nuestro cine (exceptuando a Pedro Almodóvar y algunos actores y actrices, claro)
Por cierto, esto de la foto son los Cines Callao en el centro, y echaban Rocky VI y la nueva de Clint Eastwood (todo muy americano)

I'm sure most of you know the famous father who is painted in the gardeners' store in a Park. In Spain we call him Padre de Familia and spend a lot of funny minutes watching it, even I'm not a huge fan. Do you like or watch"Family guy" in your city?

Here you can see a somekind of photo inside a disco in Bilbao district...
Because yesterday was a very special day for me... I reached 25 years old and I get my degree in Biochemistry!! It was a nice gift for my birthday as you can imagine ;)
So I had no choice and went out to celebrate it all night long! Even it was very cold, it was a really funny night!

Ayer fue un día muy especial para mí... ¡Cumplí 25 años y me licencié por fin en Bioquímica! Com opodeís imaginar fue un gran regalo por mi cumpleaños ;)
Asi que no tuve elección y salí hasta las tantas a celebrarlo! Aunque hacía muchiiiiísimo frío, fue una noche muy divertida!

T4 in Barajas

This is the new Airport terminal in Barajas, the T-4 (click here is you want to see/know more). It really huge and has an amazing architecture... I love airports because you find there lots of people from everywhere, there are wellcomes, good-byes....
Well, maybe you know last month there was an explotion here, in the car-parking and kill two people who were waiting in their cars to their families. That's really sad. I hope things change, because sometimes we take the wrong way...

Esta es la nueva terminal del aeropuerto de Barajas, la T-4. Es enorme y tiene un diseño increíble. A mí me encanta el ambiente en los aeropuertos, con gente de todos los lugares, que vienen, se van, encuentros, despedidas...
Bueno supongo que sabeís que hace poco hubo un atentado en el aparcamiento y murieron 2 personas que esperaban en sus coches a sus familias. Es una historia realmente triste. Espero que las cosas cambien, porque muchas veces cogemos el camino equivocado.

A Mexican in Madrid

This is something I've just discovered this weekend near my house... It is an sculpture of Lázaro Cárdenas, president of Mexico many years ago (see the link if you want to know more) As I read this man helped spanish people in exilio during our Civil War... Sometimes I wonder how fast time goes by... Maybe it was 60 years ago, and Spain was such a really different place (that's what my grandpas told me!)
Anyway, blue sky, historical person, interesting pose... That's the post for today! ;)

Esto es algo que descubrí este fin de semana cerca de mi casa... Una estatua de Lázaro Cárdenas, presidente de México hace ya unos cuantos años. Según he leído, este hombre ayudó a muchos españoles en el exilio durante la Guerra Civil... Es increíble cómo pasa el tiempo de rápido... Tal vez esto fue hace 60 años, y España era un país realmente muy diferente a lo que es ahora.
Bueno, me centro, cielo azul, personaje histórico, pose interesante... Es la foto de hoy! ;)

Where are you now?

Ok, today it has snowed a lot in Segovia, León, Oviedo... all these cities from the north of Spain. Maybe next week will be Madrid's turn! Here it rained in the morning but then the sun came up and stayed there for a while...
If you ignore this huge buildings behind maybe you can imagine yourself near a river... but the truth is you are in a huge and vibrant city, where at least there are lots of green areas to rest for a while :)

Hoy ha nevado en Segovia, León, Oviedo... Tal vez la semana que viene sea el turno de Madrid! Aquí empezó el día pasado por agua, pero luego el sol salió con fuerza y allí se quedó.
Si ignoras estas torres tan impresionantes tal vez puedas imaginarte cerca de un río o algo así... pero lo cierto es que estás en mitad de una ciudad enorme y viva... eso sí, donde al menos hay muchas zonas verdes en las que descansar y aislarte por un rato! :)

You can smoke in these stairs!
I think that's a way to complain about the non-smoke law which took place last year. Maybe you know there's a lot of smokers in Spain, and it was normal smoking in a bar, restaurant, office... till that law came up.
That's a colourful wall next to, uh?

Supongo que es una forma de quejarse por la ley que prohibe fumar en muchos sitios donde antes era normal, desde el año pasado. Me encanta la pared de al lado, con todos esos colores :)

Bus Station at Plaza Castilla

It's weird how is weather nowadays... I've seen blogs of our friends in North Europe with photos of the windy days and ice storms which makes me wonder what's happening with the weather. Friday in Madrid begun really foggy, but then it started to change, and the sun appeared at midday and made a beautiful and sunny day as you can see (even it's cold because we're on winter anyway) in the big bus station at Plaza Castilla.

El tiempo anda algo raro últimamente... he estado viendo en los blogs de nuestros compañeros del norte de Europa las consecuencias de los distintos temporales de viento, tormenta y hielo que ha habido estos días por allí. Aquí en Madrid ayer empezó con una niebla intensa, pero a media mañana el sol salió y se quedó un día luminoso (aunque frío, porque estamos en invierno de toas formas) como el que veis en el intercambiador de autobuses de Plaza Castilla.
¿Qué tal hace hoy en tu ciudad?

2 de Mayo

This is 2 de Mayo Square ("2nd May Square" and yes... another square!). It is named like that in honour at the heroes who fighted against french troops in 2nd May 1808. That is the monument in Malasaña district, and the sculptures are dedicated to Daoíz and Velarde who died while the assault of the French troops at Monleón barrack.
It was too a square with too much night-life in the times of "movida madrileña" in the 80' and in the last years it was the place for meeting young people having fun till the Major prohibited drinking (alcohol) in the streets.
2nd May is the day of Madrid, everyone has a holiday day :)

La plaza del 2 de mayo, en Malasaña, está dedicada a los héroes que lucharon contra las tropas francesas ese día de 1808. Las estatuas están dedicadas a Daoíz y Velarde que murieron durante el asalto de las tropas francesas al cuartel de Monleón.
También fue el centro de la Movida Madrileña en los 80 y hasta hace poco era el punto de encuentro para la gente joven que montaba sus fiestas alli, hasta que el alcalde prohibió beber en la calle (botellón).
El 2 de Mayo es el día de la Comunidad de Madrid, fiesta!

Classic and... weird

This is Alonso Martínez Square... I like this view cause there you have these beautiful and elegant buildings and at the bottom you can see that "green plug"(Colón Towers) trying to plug its self on heaven... LOL That is Génova street which ends at Colón Square (if you look carefully you'll find a little Colón there).
Anything more...? There's lot of nightlife around Alonso Martínez when the sun comes down, so if you want to have some fun... call your friends, and go out for party!

Esta es la Plaza de Alonso Martínez... Me gusta mucho esta vista porque tenemos en primer plano estos edificios majestuosos, con sus balcones, tan elegantes, y al fondo por sorpresa, encuentras un gran enchufe verde intentando conectarse al cielo... XD Ésta es la calle Génova, que termina en la Plaza Colón (si miras detenidamente verás un Colón pequeñito por allí)
¿Algo más...? Alonso Martínez es una zona con mucho ambiente por la noche, asi que si queires pasártelo bien, llama a tus amigos y sal de fiesta!

Don Quijote and Sancho Panza (and the lady behinds them who is Dulcinea del Toboso) in Plaza de España Cervantes monument. What can I say about them? I have to confess I didn't read the book yet, my mother did it while she was pregnant of me, so maybe something I've got from this extraordinary person... It seems like he wants to stop a Taxi uh? It's difficult to ride a horse nowadays in madrid ;-)

Don Quijote y Sancho Panza (y la que vemos detrás es Dulcinea del Toboso) en el monumento a Cervantes que podemos encontrar en Plaza de España ¿Qué puedo decir sobre ellos? Si acaso confesar que aun no me he leído el libro, pero mi madre lo hizo mientras estaba embarazada de mí, por lo que seguramente algo me habré llevado de este curioso personaje... Parece como si quisiera para un Taxi, verdad? Debe ser dificil montar a caballo por Madrid en los tiempos que corren... ;-)

Paseo de la Castellana

This is not the best shot ever showed of Paseo de la Castella, but it's ok for me to explain that here is the truely main street of Madrid. It's like the backbone of the city, starting at the northest and finish at the south, it passes throu modern Madrid (Azca, bussines area) and classic and elegant one, so it's a great experience driving by to see all these places (if there's no traffic-jam as well!)

Seguramente esta no sea la mejor foto del Paseo de la Castellana pero a mí me vale para explicar que es la calle verdaderamente más importante de Madrid, como la espina dorsal de la ciudad, que la atraviesa de norte a sur, pasando por el Madrid más moderno y por el más clásico y elegante; por lo que conducir por ella puede ser una grata experiencia... si no es en hora punta! :)

Palacio de la Música

Do you like cine? Palacio de la Musica ("Music palace") is actually a cinema, but an important cinema where it takes place lots of movie premiere with the main actors/actress/directors, etc. You can find it in Gran Via, next to Plaza de Callao.
This building was built between 1924-26 and in the begginig it was planned to have a party-room, one place for cinema and concerts and a summer-cinema in the roof. But then there was an accident while its construction (the front of the building collapsed) so they had to change the project and at least there was no cinema in the roof (that's a pity, it would have been great). Now it has 3 rooms and it's really beautiful inside :)

¿Os gusta el cine? El palacio de la Música es, a pesar de su nombre, un cine, y además uno de los más importantes donde ocurren la mayoria de las galas de estrenos con los actores/actrices/directores etc. Podrás encontrarlo en Gran Vía, muy cerquita de la Plaza Callao. Fue inagurado en 1926, y el diseño original incluía, a parte de una sala de conciertos y un cine, una sala de fiestas debajo del patio de butacas y un cine de verano en la azotea. Pero durante la construcción la fachada se vino abajo debido a la sobrecarga y tuvieron que rediseñar el proyecto eliminando entre otras cosas, el cine en la azotea (qué lástima, hubiera estado tan bien!).- Ahora tiene 3 salas y una decoración increíble en su interior :)

Music in the street

It's very usual to find streets musicians in the main streets of the city centre (as in the main Metro stations). This band were playing Four Season by antonio Vivaldi in Carmen street at one shopping-centre entry, and were really good at it! Life is better with music uh?

Es bastante normal encontrar músicos ofreciendo conciertos en las calles del centro (también en las estaciones de Metro más concurridas). Esta banda estaba tocando las 4 estaciones de Vivaldi, y lo hacían realmente bien! la vida es mucho mejor con música de fondo ¿verdad? :)

Carlos III and Tio Pepe

Carlos III (King of Spain and lots of things more) riding his horse and Tio Pepe building (which is an Hotel I think) in Puerta del Sol. This luminous adverstiment and the Schewppes one in Capitol buildind in Callao (showed days ago) are the only ones with lights in Madrid. You know, they're more than an adverstiment, they belong to the city landscape now :)
See this white fence at the bottom? They're doing some work to make a train (cercanias) station there!

Carlos III montado en su caballo y el edificio del Tio Pepe en la Puerta del Sol. Este anuncio luminoso, junto con el de Schweppes son los únicos que encontrarás por Madrid. Ya son más que un anuncio, ahora forman parte de la ciudad.
¿Veis la valla blanca al fondo? Están haciendo una estación de cercanías en Sol!

This is a part of the Escher exhibition in "Canal Art Centre" It's not the original paint but a bigger repro illuminated... Look at those crazy stairs... WOW ;)

M. C Escher in "Canal Art Centre"

It was so blue the sky... Last week I went to see M. C. Escher exposition in "Canal Art Centre" It was so interesting, and I made some photos I'll show you one day, but I have to tell you I like very much this pic because of the colors, red, blue, the sun reflections, the star (which is today still there). Hope you like it too! :)

El cielo estaba tan azul... La semana pasada fui a ver la exposición de M. C. Escher en la Fundación Canal y me gustó mucho, pero ya os hablaré de ella otro día. Hoy, sobre esta foto, decir que me gustan mucho los colores: el rojo, el azul, el reflejo del sol, la estrella (que todavía cuelga entre las 2 torres). Espero que os guste a vosotros también!

This is another art-street creation on a wall, but this time it owns to an electronic shop called "armonia". It's a great painting uh? This man face sounds me a lot but I can't remember his name now... Anyone knows it?

Esta es otra muestra de creación artística sobre pared, pero esta vez es la fachada de una tienda de electrónica llamada "armonía". Un gran dibujo ¿verdad? La cara de este hombre me suena muchísimo, pero ahora mismo no recuerdo al nombre... ¿Alguien lo sabe?

The grandpa and the grandson... I can't but smile while I see this photo, it's so tiny this child :) so cute... Here is so normal grandpas taking care of their grandsons while their parents are at work, even today he'll probably be at child-care-school :)
I miss this time when I was a child, I used to have a lot of fun and everything was so easy... Well, not everything, of course! ;)

El abuelo y el nieto... sólo sonrío cuando veo esta foto... es tan pequeñito, tan mono... Aquí es normal ver a los abuelos cuidar del niesto mientras los padres trabajan, aunque supongo que ahora el niño estará en la guardería.
A veces echo de menos ser pequeña, todo era más divertido y la vida parecía más fácil ¿no? Bueno, cada cosa con su momento :)

When it's cold there is nothing better to take a few of these "churros" or "porras" (which are made of flour, salt, milk and eggs) and a hot cup of chocolated-milk! This little shop is in Plaza de Castilla.
Cuando hace frio no hay nada mejor como unos cuantos churros o porras (harina, sal, huevos y leche) y un buen vaso de chocolate calentito! Este pequeño puesto está situado en la Plaza de Castilla.

Here is a vista from a caffe in 9th floor of a famous shopping centre in Del Carmen street. You can see a lot of things from here! The Schweppes building is Hotel Capitol in Callao plaza. There is Gran Via street which ends in Plaza de España (where it's two white buildings: Torre de Madrid and Edificio de España). If you enlarge the image you'll find better the Faro de Moncloa even it's a little hard.

Esto es una vista desde la cafeteria que hay en la planta 9 de un famoso centro comercial en la calle del Carmen. Vemos en primer plano el edificio Schweppes (Edificio Carrión) que es el Hotel Capitol en la Plaza de Callao. Vemos la calle Gran Vía que termina en la Plaza de España donde encontramos la Torre de Madrid y el Edificio de España (ambos blancos). Si te apuras se ve también el faro de Moncloa, aunque está muy pequeñito.

Christmas time is over...

Today is the last Christmas time day... Operators will start to remove all Christmas stuff so maybe this is the last time you can watch this star between the KIO towers in Plaza Castilla. I showed it to you before, but this time is illuminated and closer and more beautiful!

Roscón de Reyes!!

Hi everybody! Today is a special day for kids and no-kids! Tonight the Three Wiser Men (I don't know if that's right) will come to our houses and leaves our gifts! And the tradition says to eat this kind of "bread" called Roscón de Reyes. This is huge, it was given this morning in Puerta del Sol for free!

Hola! Hoy es un día especial apra niños y no tan niños! Esta noche vienen los Reyes Magos a dejarnos los regalitos en el salón! Y la tradición dicta que no puede faltar el Roscón de Reyes! Este tan grande era cortesía de Aldeas Infantiles y podías degustarlo gratuitamente en la céntrica Puerta del Sol!

Mind the hole!

It's since a long time that Madrid's ground is open to sky... (and that's not because of the underground) We've been suffering one-day-changeable signs, traffics cuts by surprise... We're so tired of that, sometimes it's like a nightmare when you have to drive thru this place. They say it all will be finished by March-April, then it'll be more close the time to vote and we'll be happy with the results... Oh, what a coincidence!

Desde hace mucho tiempo, el suelo de Madrid está abierto al cielo (y no por el Metro precisamente) . Sufrimos las obras, los cortes de tráficos, las señales que cambian de un día para otro... Es una pesadilla conducir por ahi. Dicen que todo habrá terminado sobre Marzo-Abril, cuando esté más cerca el momento de votar y estemos ya contentos con los resultados... ¿Coincidencias?

I was walking by the street when I saw this painting. I like too much this kind of art, I think it's a good idea for walls that doesn't have anything important... It's so colouring!

Ayer me encontré con este graffiti mientras andaba por la calle. Me gusta mucho este tipo de arte, creo que es una buena idea para paredes que no tienen nada importante (escaparates o cosas así).. Da un toque de color!
