Guardian angel

So, this will be my last post for an unknown time. There are some personal reasons for my doing so, but basically I am having too much to do now, I feel quite tired, and posting here -a hobby & something I cherished- has turned more into an obligation. I hope to return some day to do it, when my mood improves somehow. Until then, I am incredibly thankful to all the visitors I've met here. You are all excellent people, and I hope that, like the angel on the pic watches over Madrid, somebody also watches over you. All the best!

Decimonónico

A very ornate entrance. I like these houses very much, as you may have noticed. Nevertheless, this one's not as ornate as the one Ham publishes today.

Una entrada con mucha ornamentación. Me encantan estas casas, como ya habréis notado. de todas formas, esta no está tan decorada como la que hoy publica Ham.

Giant / Gigante

Torre Picasso (157 m, 515 ft), Madrid's highest tower...for a short time. Torre Espacio (under construction) will be Madrid's new colossus next year (they calculate it will be 250 m high). In fact, the structure already built is higher than Torre Picasso.

Torre Picasso, el edificio más alto de Madrid (157 m, 515 ft)...por poco tiempo. Torre Espacio (en construcción) será el nuevo coloso de Madrid el año que viene; creen que tendrá unos 250 m de altura. De hecho, su estructura construída ya es más alta que Torre Picasso.

Fake Gothic / Falso gótico

By now, you'll all have noticed how much I like Gothic style, period or not. In Madrid there isn't almost a 'real' Gothic remain, so here is another fake-Gothic detail in a window.

Me imagino que a estas alturas ya os habréis dado cuenta de lo que me gusta el estilo gótico, sea realmente de la época o no. En Madrid no hay prácticamente restos góticos, así que aquí tenéis otro detalle pseudo-gótico en una ventana.

Football and shopping / Fútbol y compras

The Santiago Bernabéu stadium (home of Real Madrid FC), and the mini-mall "La Esquina del Bernabéu" (The Bernabéu's Cormer). It's near to my house, so I often go there to shop, have dinner or to eat an ice-cream (there's a great ice parlour there, Giangrossi).

Railway jungle / La jungla ferroviaria

Tropical garden in the Atocha Railway Station. The station was reformed during the 90s', and the old platforms were transformed into this amazing conservatory. I love it, though it sometimes becomes oppressive, with all the heat and the humidity.

Jardín tropical de la Estación de Atocha. La estación fue reformada durante los 90, y los antiguos andenes se convirtieron en este increíble invernadero. Me encanta, aunque con el calor y la humedad es un poco agobiante a veces.

Higher and higher / Cada vez más alto

A view of Paseo de la Castellana, with Plaza de Castilla, the amazing Puerta de Europa leaning towers and a forest of cranes...typical image here in Madrid. These ones belong to the construction of the four highest skycrapers of the city, which are being built on the old Sport City of the Real Madrid.

Una vista del Paseo de la Castellana; al fondo, la Plaza de Castilla, las sorprendentes torres inclinadas de Puerta de Europa... y un bosque de grúas, una imagen típica de Madrid. Estas, concretamente, son de las obras de construcción de los cuatro rascacielos más altos de la ciudad, que se están edificando sobre los terrenos de la antigua Ciudad Deportiva del Real Madrid.

Window of the past / Ventana del pasado

Beautiful window in the facade of the Civil Engineers Association. Some professional Associations, like the Medical Association, Bar Association... are called "Colegios" (Schools) in Spain; membership is compulsory to practice. Other Associations, like the Economists one, are not compulsory, but have a certain prestige.

Bonita ventana en la fachada del Colegio de Ingenieros de Caminos, Canales y Puertos. Pertenecer a un Colegio Profesional es obligatorio en ciertas profesiones, como mádicos, abogados, etc... Otros Colegios, como el de Economistas, no son de pertenencia obligatoria, pero gozan de cierto prestigio.

White on yellow / Blanco sobre amarillo

Nymph in a novecentist house. This building, in Almagro Street, won in 1914 the prize given by the Consistory to the best built & decorated house.

Ninfa en una casa novecentista. Este edificio de la calle Almagro ganó en 1914 el premio a la casa mejor construída y decorada.

Deceiving window / Ventana engañosa

Moorish style window by the Eduardo Dato Bridge. It really dates from the early 20th. century.

I won't be in Madrid for some days, so excuse me if I can't answer to your comments as often as I'd like. Hope I'll be able to post daily, though.

Silent guy / Un tipo callado

I met this interesting -and quiet- guy at the Atocha Railway Station. He was writing something quite absorbing on his pad. I bet he's still there when I return.


Encontré a este interesante (y callado) individuo en la estación de tren de Atocha, escribiendo algo muy absorbente en su cuaderno. Seguro que sigue allí cuando regrese.

Phoenix / Fénix

This sculpture representing a young boy mounted on a phoenix was the ensign of the insurance company "La Unión y el Fénix" (Union & Phoenix). The company (created in 1879) exists no longer, but the sculptoric group remains on top of some buildings here in Madrid.

Esta escultura que representa a un joven montado sobre un fénix era el emblema de la compañía de seguros "La Unión y el Fénix". Dicha compañía, creada en 1879, ya no existe, pero el grupo escultórico se conserva en la cima de algunos edificios de Madrid.

Fresh waffles! / ¡Al rico barquillo!

This chap, dressed in the traditional chulapo (Madrid pure-breed inhabitant, like London's cockneys) outfit, is a barquillero (waffle seller). They still can be seen in Madrid, but mainly as a touristic attraction. The red cylindric box he carries has a sort of "wheel of fortune" on top. The customer pays a fixed price, and turns the wheel: he then receives as many waffles as the wheel indicates. It's fun, and a tradition which I like would be kept for many years. I once got 21 waffles!

Este tipo, vestido con el tradicional traje de chulapo (madrileño de pura cepa), es un barquillero. Aún queda alguno en Madrid, pero sobre todo son una atracción turística. El recipiente cilíndrico rojo que llevan tiene una ruleta encima; el cliente paga una cantidad fija, hace girar la rueda y recibe tantos barquillos como indica la ruleta. Es muy divertido, y es una tradición que me gustaría que se mantuviera durante muchos años. ¡Una vez me tocaron 21 barquillos!

Poet's Corner / El rincón del poeta

This artistic plaque indicates the Rubén Darío Square (Glorieta de Rubén Darío). Rubén Darío was a nicaraguan poet, father of the spanish literary Modernism. The plaque shows some of the heroes in his poems (or so I guess-I don't quite understand the presence of the Native American on the right corner):)

Esta artística placa señala la Glorieta de Rubén Darío. Rubén Darío fue un poeta nicaraguense, padre del Modernismo literario español. Esta placa muestra algunos de los héroes de sus poemas (o eso supongo; la verdad es que no entiendo mucho la presencia del indio norteamericano de la derecha):).

Election day / Jornada electoral

Yesterday Real Madrid FC chose a new President. 85,361 members were called to vote, more people than in many spanish towns! Around the elections a sort of circus was organized, with candidates giving off wine bottles, refreshments, soccer balls, tickets for concerts and the lot to their supporters. Guys on stilts were distributing pamphlets, and strange balloons floated over the stadium and the surroundigs. Here you can see the entry to the voting tents by the Santiago Bernabéu stadium. By the way, Ramón Calderón won the elections (the least known candidate), but Villar Mir, another candidate, does not accept the result and has contested it. Typical electoral process!

Ayer el Real Madrid elegía nuevo presidente. 85.361 socios estaban convocados a votar, lo que es más gente de la que hay en muchos pueblos de España. En torno a las elecciones se montó una especie de circo, con los candidatos repartiendo botellas de vino, refrescos, balones, entradas para conciertos y toda la pesca a sus partidarios. Unos tipos montados sobre zancos iban repartiendo propaganda, y extraños globos flotaban sobre el Bernabéu y alrededores. Aquí podéis ver la entrada a las carpas donde se votaba, junto al Santiago Bernabéu. Por cierto, el ganador de las elecciones has sido Ramón Calderón (el menos conocido), pero Villar Mir, otro de los candidatos, no acepta el resultado y lo ha impugnado. El típico proceso electoral.

It's hot here! / Hace calor

Yesterday many people began their holidays, and thousands of families prepare to leave Madrid for some days. No wonder they flee, in search of the sand & the sea, or of the mountain breeze, because here in Madrid it's terribly hot. The image was taken at 8:18 PM, and the thermometer indicates 34ºC (94ºF). Imagine how we feel at noon!

Mucha gente comenzó ayer sus vacaciones, y miles de familias se preparan para dejar Madrid durante unos días. No me extraña que huyan en busca de la arena y el mar, o de la brisa de las montañas, porque en Madrid hace un calor espantoso. Esta imagen se tomó a las 8:18 de la tarde y el termómetro marca 34ºC. ¡Imaginaos cómo estamos a mediodía!

DP Theme Day: Supermarkets/ Día temático en DP: Supermercados

These are two images of Caprabo, the supermarket just in front of my house. It's a typical spanish supermarket, and belongs to one of the most important supermarket chains of the country. I've decided to show you the contrast between the fresh fruit & vegs section and the tinned ones. Though I prefer the fresh ones, I like the order and colour of the second image, too.

Estas son dos imágenes de Caprabo, el supermercado que hay frente a mi casa. Es un típico supermercado español, perteneciente a una de las cadenas más importantes del país. He decidido mostraros el contraste entre la sección de frutas y verduras frescas y la de conservas. Aunque prefiero a los primeros, me gusta el orden y el color que muestra la segunda imagen.
